How to make Chana Dal | Cholaar Dal | Chana Dal Fry | Kadalai Paruppu Fry

Hello Foodies,

As we know pulses are rich in proteins, everyone should include it in everyday meal. Today we are going to prepare chana dal which is very tasty and nutritious. It can be served with rice/ paratha/ roti/ puri/ kachori.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients:

For pressure cooking:

  • Chana dal ~ ½ cup
  • Water ~ 1 ½ cup
  • Turmeric powder ~ ¼ tsp
  • Bay leaf ~ 1
  • Salt to taste

For cooking dal:

  • Onion ~ 1 chopped
  • Ginger paste ~ ½ tsp
  • Garlic paste ~ ½ tsp
  • Tomato ~ 1 large
  • Green chilli ~ 2
  • Coriander powder ~ 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder ~ 1 tsp
  • Pepper powder ~ ½ tsp
  • Tumeric ~ a pinch
  • Garam masala ~ ½ tsp
  • Sugar ~ 3 tsp
  • Oil ~ 2 – 3 tsp
  • Water ~ as required
  • Coriander leaves ~ For garnish

For Tadka:

  • Oil ~ 2 tsp
  • Dry red chilli ~ 1
  • Cumin seeds ~ ½ tsp

How to prepare:

  • Wash and soak chana dal for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes discard the soaked water and pressure cook the chana dal with 1 ½ cup water, turmeric, salt and bay leaf.
    Cover the pressure cooker and put the weight on and turn the gas on medium flame. Let it cook for 5 – 6 whistles. Let the pressure settle down by itself. Open the cooker and check whether the chana dal is soft or not. If not the then pressure cook it again for 1- 2 whistles.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Saute ginger garlic paste and then add onions . Saute onions till it become light golden brown in color.
  • Add the tomato. Add all the spices. Stir for a few minutes.
  • Add sugar.
  • Finally add the Chana dal. Cook for few minutes.
  • Now, add water and let it come to boil. Consistency depends on you. You can add more water if needed.
  • Now for tadka , take a tadka pan and heat the oil. Add cumin seeds let it sizzles. Add dry red chilli.
    Immediately, add tadka into the chana dal.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.
    Serve hot.
