Aloo Chana Dal Curry

Aloo and Chana Dal is a great combination and it is very tasty. The ingredients for cooking aloo chana dal is easily available in your kitchen. It compliments the taste of each other. It can be served as a side dish with Roti/ Paratha/ Rice.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 3 servings
Ingredients:
- Potatoes/ aloo ~ 3, medium to large, boiled, peeled, cubed
- Chana dal/ bengal gram ~ ½ cup, boiled
- Onion ~ 1, finely chopped
- Tomato ~ 1, finely chopped
- Garlic cloves ~ 3, grated
- Ginger ~ 1/2 tsp, grated
- Green chilli ~ 2, chopped
- Red chilli powder ~ 1/2 tsp
- Garam masala powder ~ 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric powder ~ 1/4 tsp
- Coriander powder ~ 1 tsp
- Curry leaves ~ 4-5
- Asafoetida/ hing ~ a pinch
- Cumin seeds ~ 1 tsp
- Mustard Oil ~ 2 Tbsp
- Sugar ~ 1/3 tsp
- Coriander leaves ~ 1 Tbsp
- salt to taste
How to Prepare:
- Soak channa dal in water for about 30 minutes.
- Wash, peel and cut the potatoes into cubes. Chop onion, tomato, green chili, and coriander leaves. Grate ginger and garlic.
- Pressure cook the cubed potato with ¼ tsp salt for 1 whistle.
- Heat oil in a pan, add hing and cumin seeds, allow the seeds to sizzle. Then add curry leaves.
- Add chopped onion, saute till it become golden brown in color.
- Meanwhile, pressure cook the chana dal with ¼ tsp of salt for 5-6 whistle.
- Add grated ginger and garlic, saute till the raw smell goes off.
- Then add chopped tomatoes and green chilies, cook till tomatoes become soft.
- Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder and sugar.
- Add boiled chana dal, boiled potatoes, coriander leaves and salt to it. Mix it well.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add sufficient water and garam masala powder.
- Mix well and simmer it for a few minutes. Check the level of salt and adjust, if necessary.
- When you get the desired consistency for the curry, turn off the gas.
- Serve hot with Roti/ Paratha/ Rice.
